Gateway Building Design

Transformed are the forgotten spaces of hallways and corridors at Casper College into provocative learning environments with a complete art installation, designed by Balmond Studio.

Balmond Studio has been exploring educational ideas through art installations as part of a series of research studies. The interactive designs now installed in Casper College are based on advanced geometric thinking developed by Cecil Balmond, founder of Balmond Studio.

Integrated artworks can be found on each level of the School, connecting up the spaces with a new kind of aesthetic. If you have art in a school, it’s usually a lone sculpture, but this goes far beyond that. It introduces a new kind of sensory and poetic experience for schools. Now the students have access to art on a larger scale.

New research by Semir Zeki, Professor of Neuroesthetics at University College London demonstrates that viewing a beautiful work of art triggers the feel-good chemical dopamine. Dopamine has many functions in the brain, including important roles in behavior and cognition, motivation, attention, working memory, and learning. Recent research also shows that looking at art helps students build important critical-thinking and literacy skills.
